During LMS class, we were made to do several tasks

1. Sing a birthday song to a stranger
2. Take nmber form the opposite sex
3. Do a fear-factor-like stun on video

The whole process was absolutely fun. For the third task, we literally ROLLED down the stairs outside Co-Op at Orchard Road!
I didnt expect the whole group to be so enthusiastic about rolling down. Everyone almost agreed immediately. We were laughing all the way and the passers-by where like all dodging the row of rolling us.

Through months of working together, I am glad that i have groupmates like them. They are a fun batch of people and if i was given another chance, i would love to work with them again. They never fail to bring laughter into project discussions and it was definitely a great experience with them :D

What must be present for me to be proud and consider myself successful in the following areas?

Family

Ability to resolve every conflict and maintain harmony among all the members of the family

Career

Have a good relationship with collegues and attain the post set for myself

Health

To be free of all illness

Love

To be able to compromise and commit

Money

Sufficient for me to have a comfortable life without worrying about the next meal and to buy the things i want with ease

Others

To be able to attain the above by the age of 30

i. What’s Your Passion?

-If money is no object, what sort of things would you choose to do?

- When do you feel most “alive” and in tune with who you really are?

- If you were in prison for some time, what would you still continue to do?

If money is no object, I would get a pool table and the ask the world number one pool player to be my teacher.

I feel most "alive" when I'm doing the things I like. For example, playing pool, reading James Patterson's novels, skating, playing the drums and learning something new. It feels especially good when i make new friends with the same passion in the process.

If i were to be in a prison, I'll continue reading James Patterson's novels and probably introduce the fantastic work of his to my cell mate.

ii. Identify Your Talents

You have done a personal inventory in the early part of the module. Identify your strengths or talents below:

- What three words best describe you?

- What do people admire, envy or like you for?

- What is unique about you?

- How would your talents serve your passions?

The 3 words that best describes me are cheerful, out-going and optimistic.

Some like me for the laughter I bring to them and some like my smile because it made them smile too :D

I am unique for I can bring fun, joy and laughter into people's life.

iii. Your Passion-Driven Vision

Align your vision for your life with your passion, values and talents.

1. What would you love to do?

I would like to skate very well and take part in competitions and play pool professionally.

2. What are you capable of doing now?

I am still stuck at the basics for skating. Coming up will be more basics until I get a strong foundation and when that happens, i'll learn slalom(a category in skating) moves.

Pool wise, i am still a rookie too. Playing for leisure is not a problem but not good enough for competitions.

3. What are your talents/ strengths? What makes you unique?

I think my strength is that i'm always willing to learn new things and i'm not afraid to ask. This enables me to make new friends from which we can exchange new learnings from skating and pool.

4. What do you want most out of life?

I want to be successful and happy. To attain success without losing friendship or integrity. It would be meaningless to be succesful when one is there to celebrate.

YOUR VISION

Now write your vision:

I will skate and play pool well, using my ability to communicate and make new friends, and in so doing achieve success and happiess

5. Fear is bad for you.

6. Fear consumes your energy.

7. Overcoming fear boosts self confidence.

8. Fear can be exaggerated.

Step 1 Know Your Fear

1. Work out what it is you fear

I would very much want to go to ESCAPE THEME PARK and try out all the rides. But the one and only thing that is stopping me from going is that i have acrophobia and aeroacrophobia which is the fear of heights and fear of high open spaces. Standing on the roof top alone is already enough to make my legs shiver and heart rate increase. Let alone turning rounds hundred metres away from ground.

2. Identify the triggers of your fear

When i'm standing at high places even with support, i'll feel an adrenaline rush and my hands will feel a very numb feeling like i'm feeling now. Just by thinking that i'm on very high places will make me feel afraid. The rides in the theme park will be an absolute challenge because the ups and downs of the rides will give me a very weird feeling in the heart. It feels like my heart has sank down and it feels somehow itchy.

3. Be aware of your fear-driven responses

i. Physical Signs of Fear

When i'm afraid,

-my face feels a tinge of numbness
-i will be lost for words
-my limbs go soft
-heart punds faster

ii. Negative Feelings, Thoughts and Behaviours

When i experience fear, the first thing my body tells me is to get out of the situation that makes me feel afraid. If the situation does not allow me to be away from the position, i will make use of breathing exercise to calm down and control my emotions. It is easiest to break down in the face of fear and that would be the last thing i would ever want it to happen. In times of exams, when bad time management and the lack of revising combines, it gives rise to fear; the fear of not able to finish the paper and the fear of not doing well. When this occurs, i will make myself think on the bright side " Never mind if i fail. There's still another chance. The most retake". I will always think of ways to make myself get out of the bad situation by being optimistic and keping my emotions in control.

Step 2 Commit to Mastering Your Fear

1. State your goal(s) for mastering your fear

I think the only way to conqure fear is to face it. Avoiding it may seem the best solution at the point of time, however, long term wise, its best to overcome it better than avoiding again when in face with it. The only possible solution for my fear of heights will be to face it. Which means i will have to go on for one of the rides and come face to face with my fear. If i really do manage to conquere aerocrophobia and acrophobia, i can join in the fun with my daredevil friends and i think i'll be a very great acomplishment because the fears has been with me for as long as i can remember.

TIME MANAGEMENT

i personally think that time management is very imporant. Without a good time management, one will find that it is difficult to complete any task on time and life is always in a mess because it is never planned. People who have bad time management will :

1. Never have time to complete the given assignment because they might have prioritised some other work that is of less importance like playing computer games, going out with friends etc.

2. Is always late for an appointment because they simply do not plan the travelling time and the preparation time.

3. Might even compromise the time spent with family and friends because work has to be rushed.

I think that time management is especially important in Poly life. Most of the people have the misconception that Poly has more free time and is stress-free. However, i totally disagree. I think we practise more time management than the JC people. As our assignments are always due a week after, we have to plan the time 7 days ahead and majority will just delay doing the assigmnents to tommorow and tommorow never comes.

Similarly, some of the projects are due only after 14 weeks and this is the ultimate challenge. There is a sharp contrast in groups with good time management and groups with bad time management. Groups with good time management will have already completed the project by week 13 and is checking through for errors. On the other hand, groups with poor time management will be alot of meet-ups on the very last week and is often unsure about what they are doing. Having too much freedom just equals to an extra self-discipline and time management.

Therefore, people with good time management will lead a fulfulling life people while people with poor time management will have to live with panic and disorganised life because

" If you fail to plan, you plan to fail"

1. You and your sibling (or parents) both want to use the computer at the same time.

A I would give up wanting it; no questions asked.

B I would try to force the other party to let me use the computer first.

2. You were upset with a friend for not doing her share of the work for a project. In effect, you did the entire project by yourself.

A I would not tell her how I feel but I would give up on her as a good friend.

B I would listen carefully to my friend’s reasons, and if his reasons were good, I would not let the tutor know that she hasn’t done a thing.

3. You and a classmate both want to use the printer at the same time.

A I would give in to my classmate and write her off as a friend.

B I would ask to solve the problem by suggesting that one person prints the documents for both of us. In the end, both of us wait the same amount of time.

4. You and a classmate both don’t want to be the presenter for the group.

A I would give in to my classmate and write her off as a friend.

B I would compromise by working out an arrangement for alternating the role of presenters for future presentations.

5. You and your friend both are deciding where to go for dinner.

A I would try to force my friend to go where I want to eat even if this will upset her.

B I would listen carefully to my friend and if she is able to convince me, I would let her have her way because a good friend is important.

6. You and your classmate are working on a group project. Both of you want to draw the illustrations, neither wants to write the report.

A I would insist on drawing the illustrations, not caring if she was angry or upset with me.

B I would compromise by agreeing for each of us to draw half the illustrations and write half the report.

7. Your neighbour told you to clean the drain outside your house as the dead leaves can harbour mosquito breeding grounds. You see no reason why you should be the one doing all the hard work when it is a common drain.

A I tell my neighbour to clean the drain himself if the dead leaves are bothering him.

B I would ask for both of us to work on cleaning the drain together since it is a common drain that lies between both your properties.

8. You and your date are going to a movie. You have been dying to watch “Superman” but your date insists on watching “Pirates of the Caribbean”.

A I would choose to watch “Pirates of the Caribbean” because my relationship with my date is important.

B I would suggest that both of watch the animated film “Cars” instead.

9. Your colleague told several other people some unflattering information about you.

A I would listen carefully to why he said those negative things about me, and if his reasons were more valid, I would forgive him.

B I would try to solve the problem by asking my colleague what happened and work out an agreement where you will discuss differences openly.

10. You believed that you did most of the work on a joint project; so did your colleague.

A I would compromise by agreeing that we both did half.

B I would try to solve the problem by reviewing each aspect of the paper and decide who had done how much on that aspect.

The results show that i am an OWL.

Collaborating (The Owls)

When your goals and relationships are highly important to you, you want to act like an owl. You will negotiate to seek solutions that satisfy your goals and those of the other person so that a high-quality relationship can be maintained. Owls see conflict as a means of improving relationships by reducing tension between two persons. They are not satisfied until the tensions and negative feelings have been fully resolved.

Kare Anderson’s Model for Conflict Resolution

STEP 1

Identify my main needs

1. Attachment to big 4 accounting firms

2. To ace all the modules and be among the top of 2010 Ngee Ann graduates and proceed to university

The best outcome would be that i did well in all the modules and get attached to one of the big 4 accounting firms. The reason why i want a place in the big 4 during attchment is because if i really do perform well during the period, i might get myself a position. While the least i can expect will be to be attched to a reputable firm where i can further my career in. The very first step to achieve what i want is to do well in all the modules. Since poly is very project-based, group members play a very huge role. It is often so that we share different agendas and future aspects. Thus some may put in little effort in group works because of their own reasons. This might cause a conflict due to different expectations.

This is when we communicate to them. We try to understand the reason why they are not putting in as much effort as the others. They might have a special reason not made known to us. Communicaton reduces conflicts and will make us understand the person more.

STEP 2

Reach out to find the other person’s main needs

We have tried to communicate and one of the reasons we got to know was that her travelling time from school back home takes 1 1/2 hours. So it would be late for when she reach home if we were to stay in school until 9 pm to discuss about the project. When we told her that she could leave early and we'll settle the rest of the work, she was grateful and initiated to help from home. Another reason why she could not commit to the project was because she has not been attending lecture for quite some time and she has absolutely no knowledge on the topics that we're doing so she could not help much. And the reason for not coming to school is because of the travelling time. She is too lazy to take all the trouble to travel.

STEP 3

Listen to the other person.

We tried to talk and persude her to come to lecture more often because its all for her own good. Letting a classmate go onto the road of retaking modules is the last thing we would ever want it to happen. The whole class would help her in her work and try to help her tide through examinations and projects. We also give encouragement to encourage her to come to school more often.

STEP 4

Propose a solution that supports their main needs and yours as well.

In times whereby she don't know the subject, i will lend her my notes and explain the whole chapter. I will have to sacrifice my studying time to explain and guide her through. Although it is sometimes time consuming, helping a friend in need is always worthwhile. By teaching and encouraging her in the process, i can also revise on the subjects and help her improve

In conclusion, i think that to achieve my goals is important, but the friendship attained in the process is more meaningful.
